CLOUD-BASED Microsoft Office rival Google Docs is going mobile so users can read their docs on portable Internet connected devices like smartphones and tablets. We reported last week that Google updated its suite of cloud-based applications with a simplified GUI and three visibility options so documents, spreadsheets and presentations can be given in public or privately to anyone with a link. Now Google is putting all that Google Docs offers on mobile technology for use on the go.”Last week, we announced that the Google Docs viewer supports .doc and .docx attachments,” blogged Mickey Kataria, a Google Docs software engineer.”Today we’re also releasing a mobile version of the Google Docs viewer for Android, iPhone and iPad to help you view PDFs, .ppt, .doc and .docx files you’ve uploaded to your documents list, without needing to download the file.”Google has implemented page switching and pan zoom on its mobile viewer. Ipad and Iphone users can use pinch zoom as well.Sounds like a plan, but Google is supporting only Android OS based devices and Apple’s IOS so far. The cappuccino company only gets a look in because Google doesn’t want pass up a chance to plug in to the Ithings market, we reckon.Even if Google makes its Google Docs mobile for all comers, we don’t fancy manipulating docs on smartphone screens.
